Detective Terrance Juhler had spent ten years working for the Philadelphia Police Department before he arrived at the conclusion that if Philly's criminal element didn't kill him, an ulcer would probably do the job. He'd embarked on a career in police work upon retiring from the Marine Corps at the ripe old age of forty-seven. He had a working knowledge of how law enforcement worked, by virtue of having sat in the back seat of police cars on many occasions during his juvenile life. When a judge finally gave him the choice between jail and military service, he'd chosen to become a marine. He was seventeen at the time. On many occasions he'd reflected on how that judge had probably saved his life, as ironic as that seemed while he was in combat and bullets were flying all around him. While he'd done his time in The Corps, his attitude had changed about many things. When he got out and needed a job, police work had seemed logical. Who better to catch a thief than an ex thief?

It had been fun at first. But as anonymous as members of the Taliban were, criminals in America were even harder to spot. Both were willing to try to kill you, but the rules of engagement in America put cops at a decided disadvantage. After ten years of wondering whether thugs or the politicians who ran the police department were worse, he'd finally started thinking about giving in to his wife's repeated pleas to move out of the city to somewhere sane. About that time he got a call from a sergeant who had served under him for one hitch in The Corps.

It seemed that a place named Millvale needed a detective, and the only man already on their force who was experienced enough to move into that position refused to do so. That man was Brady Williams and he now urged his friend and former boss, Gunny Juhler, to come to Millvale to apply for the position. Juhler did so and, even though he only had two years' experience as a detective, it was in a major city, which was good enough for Chief Robinson.

He'd been on the job for five years, now, and his solve rate was 82%. Of course the most serious crime he'd investigated in those five years was an embezzlement case, if you didn't count the homicides that had all turned out to be either accidental or suicides.

So a real live attempted armed robbery was kind of interesting.

He sat facing Claire Bonneville in the "interrogation room", which was actually an unused office with an old Army Surplus gray metal desk in it and two chairs. He'd arranged the chairs on the same side of the desk so it wasn't between them, which would give her a feeling of security. He was on the side of her nearest the door, which was supposed to make her feel trapped. And, he was sitting within two feet of her, leaning forward into her space, invading it intentionally.
