CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The concrete sky looked ready to crack and shower the city as Molly Goodings trekked from Finchley Central Tube station to her flat. Finding herself distracted at work by too many students taking advantage of her open-door policy, she had gathered up the books she needed to help Daniel on his case and had left the university.

Her backpack pulled on her spine from the weight of the books and essays inside. Molly felt the first spots of rain landing on her cheeks as she reached her front door. Swinging the backpack off her back, she dropped it on the porch step and dug in its front pocket to retrieve her keys.

Unlocking the door, she rolled her eyes. The bottom lock had been left off again. She knew it would be the students who lived above her. They never locked the front door, left endless piles of post in the hall, and listened to music way too late into the night. She hoped they would move soon. It was only a few months until the end of the academic year, and they were final-year students. If they didn’t move she thought she might, although she was loath to leave the flat. She had lived there for almost three years and felt settled.

Unless I moved in with Daniel…

Surprised at the thought, she shook herself and stepped into the hallway, shutting the door behind her, bolting the bottom lock and rifling through the envelopes.

Way too early to be thinking so far ahead!

She found a gas bill with her name on it, then unlocked her own front door. She spotted a smudge of something black and oily near the lock and wiped it off with a finger before rubbing her finger clean on her jeans. They needed a wash anyway.

The flat was cold; the heating wasn’t due to come on for another three hours, when she would normally be home. She dumped her backpack in the living room, then headed into the kitchen to flick on the boiler, which rumbled happily. Minutes later she had a cup of tea and could feel some heat starting to come through from the radiators.

She began to leaf through the first book, a text on the representation of sex in ancient iconography. She was looking for any of the symbols that had been used at the crime scenes – the ones she hadn’t recognised, anyway. The main problem was that she didn’t know where the unfamiliar symbols came from. It was evident that the killer Daniel and his team were looking for had taken inspiration from different cultures and sects, which made it hard to know where to start. Hence the stack of books.

Molly stopped when she came to a symbol of Scandinavian origin. Vertical in shape, it looked approximately like the letter V but was rendered with four lines instead of two. It also had one horizontal line cutting across it. According to the book, it had something to do with strength and had been found to relate to life in some contexts.
