CHAPTER SEVEN

After hearing what had happened at Amy's, and Sadie and Sally's horrifying experience, Penny decided that it was time to hold a public meeting. She felt as if Father Gordon wasn't taking the matter seriously so she had to take things into her own hands.

She started preparing flyers to post in the pub, the grocers, and the post office.

She was sure that the curse on the village would be fulfilled on the four hundredth anniversary of the hanging of Old Ledra and time was running out. She had to make the villagers aware of the forthcoming doom. They would probably think she was crazy but that didn't matter.

They had to have their say on whether or not they would open the grave at the back of the church regardless of permission from the authorities. After all it wasn't on hallowed ground so it wouldn't be desecration. In fact it was on private land owned by Dr. Morgan. She was sure he would go along with the idea.

If the story was just a legend and there was nothing in the grave why was this demon threatening them?

The gravel path led her to the doctor's two storey, old world charm, stone cottage. It looked as if it had been secretly placed there, nestling in the clump of trees. It was blended into the greenery by the ivy clambering up its side. A large chimney poked out of one side of the roof and a small chimney out of the other.

She knocked on the door.

The woman who answered the door could have graced any magazine cover. Her blue eyes were calm and emotionless. Her warm chestnut hair brushed against her pastel white skin.

"Good morning, Penny," said Mrs. Morgan in a soft voice. "Are you feeling sick?"

"No, Mrs. Morgan," Penny replied. "But I would like to have a word with your husband."

"Please come in," she said. "He doesn't have anyone with him at the moment. I'll let him know you're here. By the way, how is your Aunt Molly?"

"She's fine, thanks," replied Penny.

"If you don't mind waiting here, I'll go and tell him you want to see him," she said.

A few minutes later, Dr. Morgan appeared.

"Hello Penny," he said, kissing her on the cheek. "My wife tells me you're not here for a medical."

That's right, doctor," she said. "I need to ask you a favour."

"A favour?" he asked, raising his eyebrows.

"Yes," she replied. "It's about that piece of land you own at the back of the churchyard."

"I see," he said. "You haven't come to complain that it's overgrown with weeds, have you?"

"Not at all," she said, as her lips expanded into a grin.

"Then you'd like to buy it?" he asked.

"No," she replied.

"Well let's go into my office and see what it is you need," he said, leading her down the hall. "Take a seat."

“I don’t know whether you know anything about the old grave that’s on your land,” she said. “Apparently it’s supposed to contain the body of a man who was hanged as a witch almost four hundred years ago.
