Chapter 18

BREAKING THE LAW

“You guys know the drill by now,” Breck said. “We can’t comment on an ongoing investigation.”

The flock of reporters was like a gang of hungry hounds pulling against their master’s leash, trying to stay on the trail.

“Is it true items were found by the tree and they might have been used during the execution of Officer Lenza?” a reporter said.

“No comment. We can’t talk about it. Comprende?”

Bill approached the familiar yellow tape that went across the C-24 canal sign. Abernathy locked eyes with him and ordered the reporters back who were attempting to move the boundary forward.

“You see this yellow tape?” Abernathy said with a firm tone. “You’re not to push against it. It is here for a reason, and that is to keep you guys back and out of the way so we can do our jobs.”

“One of your own died,” a reporter somewhere in the middle of the mix said. “How is that you doing your jobs?”

Abernathy’s face burned red from anger, and Breck stepped in and made the reporters back up about a foot.

Abernathy stood there with his jaw tight and a subtle shake to his body. “Whoever said that should learn discretion and respect. You’re a fucking shark.”

Abernathy walked over to Bill and lifted the yellow tape.

“Come with me and let’s talk.”

The gaggle of reporters voiced their protest, but Officer Breck took control over them, giving Abernathy the opportunity to make things right with the blogger.

“I owe you an apology,” Abernathy said to Bill. He had him in the same spot where Bill had dropped his voice recorder.

“No you don’t,” Bill said.

“I do. I put my hands on you in anger, and I should never have done that.”

“It’s OK,” Bill said. “Believe me, I understand. One of your officers was killed and you were angry and frustrated. I was there when I shouldn’t have been.”

“So we’re good?”

“We are good,” Bill said. “But that isn’t the reason I came here today.”

Abernathy looked at the gathering of reporters and made sure the distance from them to him and Bill was sufficient enough to keep them from picking up on what they were talking about. He didn’t see any parabolic dishes so he felt they were at a safe distance.

“I did something you’re not going to be very happy about, but I believe the end result was worth the risk on my end,” Bill said.

“What is it?” Abernathy said and shifted his weight from one foot to the other.

“The girls who found the body by the tree and were sitting in your squad car that night . . . I asked you who they were and you wouldn’t tell me. Do you remember that?”

“Of course I do.”

“I understand why you have to do that, and please try to understand that I report the news, and sometimes I do things . . . make decisions to get the story no matter what. I do things that maybe I shouldn’t do.”

“What did you do, Bill?”

“Sometimes I walk a thin line between what is right and wrong―ethical and unethical―to get answers.
