Chapter Thirteen

Joy and Ron Wilson hadn’t seen or heard from their son in over two weeks. He may have been called away on business, or decided at the last minute that his schedule was clear enough to take a few days vacation. Whatever the circumstance, it wasn’t like Adam to miss spending Father’s Day with the family. That’s what had them concerned. Had he been forced to miss it, he would have called Ron to explain. Joy decided to drive by the marina to check and see if the sailboat was still docked. Pulling up to the gate, she was able to see his slip from the road. The Hunter wasn’t there. Requesting entry from the guard, she parked her vehicle and made her way to the main office.

“Hi, can I help you?” asked the young man behind the counter.

“Yes. I’m Joy Wilson. My son, Adam, keeps his sailboat here. I was wondering if you could tell me if you have seen him around in the last week or so.”

The man frowned. “Uh, let me think. The last time I saw Adam he was fuelling up.” He tilted his head in the direction of the gas pumps situated directly out in front of the office. “That was, oh, two weeks ago maybe?”

“Did he mention he was going anywhere? With the boat, I mean.”

“Not that I can recall. Maybe the dockmaster knows.” He turned to address a slightly older man entering the office. “Did Adam Wilson tell you he was going on a sailing trip?”

The dockmaster shook his head. “No. He doesn’t usually.”

“You wouldn’t happen to recall the last time you saw him, would you?” Joy asked.

He glanced over at the calendar hanging on the wall. “June 4th? Maybe 5th? Somewhere around then. The sailpast was taking place that weekend, and I remember Adam was stocking up the Hunter. I asked him if he was going to miss the event and he mumbled something like, ‘I’m afraid so,’ or ‘I guess so.’ I could tell he wasn’t in a very good mood so I didn’t say anything more.”

Joy thanked the men for their help and left the office. Damn, that kid! Why is it so hard for him to let someone know he’d be away? She wasn’t one of those doting mothers who had to know where her kids were every moment of the day, but she did insist Adam tell her when he was taking the boat on a trip and when he was planning on returning. She had heard her share of stories of boaters having problems with their sails, mechanical difficulties, or worse, falling overboard and drowning. Irritated, she dialled his cell phone number and was directed to his voicemail. “Adam, this is your mother,” she said sternly. “Call us please. We just want to know if you’re all right.”

Over the next couple of days, whenever the telephone rang, Joy hoped it was Adam, only to be disappointed when it wasn’t his voice on the other end of the line.
