Sam and James were waiting for Lucas as he walked up to the gate of the school. Neither looked happy, but he was used to that now. They didn’t like him anymore, they just feared him. Well, so what? They would do what he said, and that was the most important thing.

“So?” he asked. “Have you put the word out?”

Sam nodded. “I made some comments to a couple of people I know.”

James just nodded, his eyes avoiding Lucas’s.

‘He is going to betray you,’ the voice in his head told him.

Lucas stopped walking and turned his attention on James. “You don’t trust me. You don’t believe me, do you?”

James kept his eyes on the ground. Lucas could only see his mohawk.

‘Do it. Hurt him,’ the gleeful voice in his mind insisted.

Lucas concentrated, his fingers in his pocket finding the arrowhead. He rubbed it, feeling its energy course through him, building in him. His eyes focused on James’s head. He let a little of the energy in his mind slip into James. The other boy grunted, his hands going to his head.

Lucas let a little more out and saw James’s legs begin to shake. A smile spread across his face. James was trying to ignore him, great, he could do more now. He could cause more pain. He could…

Sam waved his hand in front of Lucas’s face, breaking his concentration. “Lucas, stop it. Okay, he believes. Okay? He’ll do what you want. Right, James?”

James didn’t speak, but he did nod.

“Remember what I did to the priest,” Lucas reminded them. “He lost his breakfast all over the sheriff’s shoes. You don’t want to end up like that do you, James?”

James finally looked him in the eye. “No, I don’t, Lucas.”

Lucas grinned at him. “Great. See, I’m getting stronger every day. You guys were my friends when I got here, and I’m gonna look after you, okay, but you have to do what I want. We’re going to make this school our own, and then maybe the town, and then…who knows.”

Sam looked from James to Lucas. “But where is this coming from? Have you figured that out yet?”

Lucas shook his head. “No. But I have power. I have the power to make our lives fantastic. Who cares where it comes from.”

He didn't mention the voice in his head. Surely they wouldn't believe that, or they'd think he was crazy. He certainly had no intention of telling them what the voice said about them...or their future.

“So,” Lucas changed the subject back again, “Have you put the word out.”

This time they both nodded. Lucas was happy enough with that.

“Lunchtime, at the back of the gym,” he told them.
