Gulf of Mexico

Edward had reached the Lobster fields in good time. The sky was pristine and there wasn’t another ship in sight. The ocean, it seemed, was his. He had briefly witnessed a jet plane off in the distance, but as far as he could see, the water was his sole domain. When he had been younger, he had often spent time out at sea, just off the coast so he could still see land, but enough to detach himself from humanity. Sometimes you just needed to be alone.

The door to the wheelhouse opened and his first mate popped his head in. A Mexican, the first mate was one of the most loyal and dedicated men Edward had ever employed. So valuable was he, that Edward had even left something to the man in his will. Not that he presently had that much to leave, not with having to rebuild his business almost from scratch. But he figured it was the thought that counted.

Edward was pleased with his decision to put the boat out to sea. By the look of things, they had brought in a good catch today, so the risk had been worth it in his minds.

“Catch is all in Boss,” the First mate said.

“Then let’s turn this baby around. Drinks are on me when we get in,” Edward said. The first mate beamed his approval at the news. Edward would only have a few though. He suspected his wife wouldn’t be too happy about him disregarding the Coast Guards advisory. He wasn’t normally one to break the rules, but sometimes you just had to look after number one.

To the right of the ship wheel, a satellite phone started to ring. The First Mate disappeared back outside, his presence no longer required. To his right, the VHF Marine radio hissed its low static.

“Yeah,” Ed said answering the phone. He knew who it was, and prepared himself for the inevitable tongue lashing. He loved her to bits, but man she didn’t half go on sometimes.

“Ed, where the hell are you,” a distressed female voice demanded. It was his wife, Gloria.

“Just heading back from the catch. What’s up?”

“Oh God?”

“Honey?” In the background of the phone call, Edward could hear a wailing sound, a noise he’d heard many a time before. The rising and falling tone was unmistakable when you had lived as long as he had in hurricane country. It was, in his opinion, one of the scariest noises humans had ever created.

“You have to get back here. It’s all over the TV, there is an asteroid heading towards the gulf. It’s going to crash land in about an hour.” He was about to ask something when his radio burst into life. It was tuned into the Marine Emergency broadcast and he listened with growing horror as the warning came through of the devastation that was about to occur.

“Ed, are you there? Ed?”

“It’s Ok honey. I’m turning back now. Where are you and the kids.”

“We are heading inland. They’ve issued a tsunami alert.
