Once the altar is set, you’ll want to get into a very light meditative state. Shallow but concentrated breaths for a count of around four will do. As you meditate, begin to open up the mind to the idea of what spirit means. Begin to sense where it might be flowing from. Do you feel the gentle tugging that might pull you forwards or back? Is it a tingling sensation in the core or the crown of the head? Perhaps an increased psychic awareness? These are all experiences that tend to follow the invocation of spirit. Simply focusing on it already begins the process of inviting its presence. It has already begun to join you.

Now we’ll begin our focused effort to engage spirit to the best of our abilities. When ready, take up the wand if you have one or use the tips of your fingers to cast a spirit circle around your space. You probably have your own way of imagining the circle power but I’d like to challenge you to really pay attention to this particular process. The circle is cast with spirit and it is spirit that is primarily responsible for keeping it together. If you imagine a gentle line of electric energy being laid down upon the circumference, imagine it instead as being like an atomic blast of fierce and thick energy, pouring out from the Otherworld. As the line is drawn, this energy is also filling the inside of the circle. Your space is being filled with a huge amount of power just while casting the circle. This is the type of power that is not typically called upon until the raising of energy later on in a ritual.

Let this energy coalesce and swirl about you. Breathe it in and let it trickle and mingle with all your bodies, physical and etheric. Then speak the words of communion:

Out of the void, out of the black

Spirit emerges on the breath of the gods

From the center and from the core

Coming from nothing and coming from all
