TWENTY-SIX

Frank watched the two men climb in through the bedroom window. He had left the window open, figuring whoever came for him would do that, and doing so, give him a clear shot. But he didn’t pull the trigger. As he lay there watching these two men invade his house, the home he had shared with his lovely Sadie for all these years, he realized that he wasn’t going to kill anyone. He just didn’t have it in him anymore. He had done his share in the war, maybe more than his share, and had been proud of his service up until his last assignment. But that was long ago. He was old now, he knew, but it wasn’t just that. He had changed. He had told his nephew Billy that he had lost his taste for killing. But it was more. He knew these men were here to murder him. That they were hoping to find him sleeping in his bed, maybe hoping he wasn’t alone, and they were going to kill him and anyone else they found. He would be justified in killing them, simple self-defense. He knew, too, that if he didn’t end this now, it might not end until he himself was dead. He would be doing the world a favor by ridding it of these two; these three if he got real lucky and could get off another good shot. It shouldn’t have any effect on him at all, like squashing a bug, he thought, but he couldn’t do it. Instead he watched through his scope, the crosshairs perfectly aligned on his targets as they climbed in through the window. Once inside, one of them turned and slid the window shut behind him.

He watched the house for several more minutes. He could make out no movement inside until a light went on briefly in the kitchen, and then off again. He swung his scope to the woods and could just make out the head and the barrel of the rifle sticking up behind the downed tree.

Time to boogie, he thought. Clear out slow and easy, take his time and make sure he wasn’t seen or heard. He would make his way back to the car past his neighbor’s property on the other side of ridge. He was glad he had thought to turn the car around. The car was parked pointing slightly downhill. It couldn’t be seen from here, and certainly not from below, but he had some electrical tape in the car, and he would cover his brake lights anyway. He was pretty sure he could push the car until it started rolling, and then coast a good part of the way down the other side of the ridge in neutral. He’d rather not start the car unless absolutely necessary. He knew the sound would carry in these hills. Even if they couldn’t place where the sound of the engine was coming from, they’d most probably figure out who was up here. Better to let them wait, scope out the house until they got tired or bored.
