12.

That Sunday it started snowing about midday. The snow fell lightly and then more heavily through the night. Every hour or so before I went to bed I turned on the outside light by the porch to make sure the snow was still falling. Snowfall like this felt like a dream come true! It just kept coming down. With any luck school would be canceled.

Before falling asleep that night I said a prayer, and then I thought about Susan and my dad. I didn’t really want my dad to be alone, but at the same time I wasn’t ready to have a new person in our house. Still, I knew having Susan around couldn’t hurt as much as the early days after my mom left, when I missed her so much I could hardly breathe, dreaming while not asleep of seeing her or speaking with her again.

I looked out the window to make sure the snow was still falling. I saw the light from Julie’s bedroom window cast on the snow.

She’s still awake.

I thought about going downstairs to talk to her. How did Julie feel about all this? I didn’t know how to ask her. I was just glad to know she was home.

I slept well that night, comforted by the gentle sound of falling snow blowing against the window.
