Chapter Eight

REBEKAH DWELLED IN a special hell where she had no control of her life. She had no freedom. Someone always accompanied her no matter where she went. She felt she couldn’t breathe.

Mr. Cutler and Esther wanted her in a place of safety, but she feared there was no where she could go to escape her fate. Rebekah realized the obstacle she faced. There were not many options: marry Jeremiah and live in a loveless marriage or disappear to have the baby and give it away, never to see her child again.

Either choice condemned her to a life of unhappiness. Jeremiah was a mere boy. Even if she chose to marry him, Rebekah would still feel the eyes of society on her. Marrying so quickly after Ian died would also blemish her reputation. Though, the sanctuary of marriage would allow her to keep her child.

She understood the simplest solution would be to give the baby away. She could go away for a time with the cover of grieving and come back to live a normal life. No one would suspect her shame, but she would know.

Her brothers were no better. They hovered about her, encasing her in a tomb and shielding her from the outside world. They wanted her back as she had been, which was an impossibility.

For years, she had cared for her siblings’ welfare and the others around her. She had never considered she would have a future. Ian thought he had given her one.

Yet, she couldn’t see passed the problem of today.

Moreover, Jonathan Corbett’s appearance had greatly disturbed her more than she would ever admit. In her youth, she had loved him. She had had dreams. His memory had been precious to her.

Now, he knew of her disgrace. It had been so humiliating. And the worst part, the most horrible part, the memory that had her stomach sick was the look in Jonathan’s eyes.

She could never face him again.

To further frustrate those who loved her, she made no decision and refused to contemplate the consequences of not doing so.

The grandfather clock struck ten. Katy had been announced and waited for her. Rebekah smoothed out her skirt and walked down the stairs into the drawing-room.

As was etiquette, she was in mourning for Ian. As his fiancé, it was expected that she would refrain from social gatherings. Though, thankfully, Katy called most days.

She needed to see her friend’s face. It gave her a sense of normalcy where there was none. Moreover, the visits served as a diversion from her troubled life.

Walking into the room, Katy smiled a brilliant smile. “Good morning, Rebekah. I hope you don’t mind. I brought guests.” She gestured over to the two ladies sitting on the sofa. “Randa you know and this is Mademoiselle Sophie Fontaine. She is from France...and has been to King Louie’s court. Is that not most exciting?”
