Chapter 16

I tried to focus on my real-life priorities. One day, I returned a phone call to a realtor my mother referred me to. Bonita Johnson was licensed in Maryland. I wanted to transfer Karlos to St. Michaels Catholic School in Lanham, the same school that Christian went to when he was little. Christian would be able to help me, picking up Karlos when I had to study. My base salary plus my commission put me in a higher income bracket. I asked around and had my heart set on an upscale development in Prince George’s County. Woodmore was considered the Gold Coast for the African American middle class. I had given myself a year to find a home, move and transfer Karlos to St. Michaels.

I was excited the day I went to meet Bonita. I printed out the directions and ended up in a fabulous neighborhood with manicured lawns, long driveways and two-car garages. Why was she showing me these homes? They had to be in the $400,000 range. I couldn’t afford anything I was seeing. I pulled up to a black Mercedes near an empty lot. An older black woman got out.

“Nikki?”

“Yes. Hi, Bonita. These homes are nice but I can’t afford what I imagine they cost,” I said.

“No, no … I have specs for the upcoming townhomes. They won’t be ready until early next year but they’re going fast during preconstruction. We should be able to get a great deal with your salary and your credit history. Plus, your mom told me that you’re a veteran.” We spent the next hour going over the pros and cons of going through with a potential deal. I decided to move forward with saving my money for my first home. I needed to make more money and in a short timeframe.

I had planned on buckling down and closing more contracts at work. I planned to cover the $5,000 down payment on the house with two commission checks. Just the thought gave me a headache. I closed my books and called the name on the napkin that Mickey gave me regarding the private party. I laid across the bed and dialed Valencia Morton’s number.

“Hello, may I speak to Valencia?”

“This is she.” Her voice was measured.

“Hi, Valencia. This is Nikki. Mickey gave me your number regarding your birthday party.”

“Yes, she said you may be calling.”

“I wanted to call to tell you that I don’t really strip. I just did a fashion show because Roxy asked me to.”

“Mickey only had good things to say about you. This will be a private party at my home. So, I’m not really interested in a stripper who is lewd. The classier the better. I would prefer if you weren’t too scandalous. Some of my friends are straight and some are gay.”

I hesitated. Was I not going to be able to get out of this?

“Hello?”

“I’m here. When is your party?” I asked.

“November nineteenth. How much do you charge?” she asked.

“How many songs would you want me to do?”

“Two songs would be enough.
