Kallis Papa,

I don’t know whether to pity the Forest Brothers or admire them. What can one person do? How can twenty people or two hundred or even two thousand people with only hope and determination, and perhaps the occasional functional rifle, battle against three million men with marching boots?

People fear the Soviets more than the devil. Any hint of partisan opinion, any trace of disloyalty is reason for arrest. I fear for Toomas, for anyone who fights for Estonia.

I don’t want to be scared to see my friends. But I am. I don’t want to be bullied into submission. But I will succumb.

Because I want to live. To see you and Mama. To be together on my birthday, eating kringel, drinking coffee, and singing.

If you were here, you’d tell me, “The pen is mightier than the sword.”

One person, one book, one pen could make a difference. If the time were right. If anyone were listening.
