LACK OF SLEEP SETS THE AMYGDALA ON FIRE!

Researchers have found that when we’re sleep-deprived, our amygdala is 60 per cent more emotionally reactive (Walker, 2018). The amygdala – as we discuss in Chapter 18 – is the part of our brain that’s involved in our fight, flight, freeze response. When we sleep well, our brains are more balanced and more able to keep us on an even keel. Walker points out that it doesn’t matter if you don’t sleep at all one night, or have just five hours sleep each night for five consecutive nights, the results are the same: our emotions swing about like they’re on a pendulum. I can definitely relate to this when trying to pack up a tent after a rubbish night’s sleep on a campsite!
