6. Lost Heirs
Chas sighed as he leaned back in the comfortable armchair Ms. Klimy had added to her cramped office after he complained one time too many about the hardbacked chair she kept for servants called in for scoldings. Or orders. Or whoever she didn't like, at any rate. As far as he could tell, Ms. Klimy never called the servants to her office.
"Nothing," Ms. Klimy said grimly as she slammed the last accounting book shut. "We've found absolutely nothing to indicate what happened to the heirs. Again. I don't know why you even attempted it, my Lord."
"Because the books are changing and there might be new information," Chas said. He rolled his eyes at Ms. Klimy's glare. "I know, I know. Only around the cats."
"You are not bringing them in my office," Ms. Klimy snapped.
From the way her eyelid twitched and her hands shook, she might just make a credible effort of attempting to kill him if he did. Chas couldn't honestly blame her. Neither of them were cat people, though Ms. Klimy took it to extremes. She still had bite marks bandaged on her hands and claw marks on her arms and face.
"No, I'm not," Chas said even though it was a tempting idea. "I still had to check one last time before I go talk to Phoenix Tanzer. His jaw should be well-healed by now. I'm not sure how I'll get useful information out of him. He never respected me at all."
"He certainly didn't," Ms. Klimy said. She pursed her lips and shoved the accounting book back into its place on the shelves. "You'll have to take an escort. Someone intimidating, preferably someone that Phoenix does respect."
"Or doesn't know," Chas agreed. "That limits the choices rather dramatically."
They both sighed. Ms. Klimy's office was considerably improved from the first time Chas had seen it. The stacks of accounting paperwork, bills, and miscellaneous books she'd snuck out of the library were gone. All of the shelves built into the walls had been overflowing, accounting books stacked haphazardly wherever Ms. Klimy could shove them.
Now, since Chas had hired a proper accountant, the books were neat and tidy. The shelves were perfectly organized. Ms. Klimy's office was a bastion of organization in the middle of the chaos that defined Castle Manor. It was a welcome change.
If only it helped them solve this problem.
The door creaked open an inch, then two inches.
Both Chas and Ms. Klimy stiffened. While Chas went for the knives hidden up his sleeves, Ms. Klimy eased a stout oak cudgel from her desk drawer.
The orange kitten slow-blinked at Chas.
"Oh no," Ms. Klimy snapped. "Not in my office!"
"Shush," Chas sighed as he wiggled his fingers invitingly at the kitten while doing Jade's slow-blink thing.
The kitten happily bounded into the office, jumped up on to Chas' lap and began purring loudly. It, she, seemed so happy to have found him again. Ridiculous, that's what it was. How in the world had he gotten adopted by a kitten when he didn't
