When Alexandra entered the Red Palace that evening after her dinner with the lord, it was to the sound of loud conversation. Curious, she entered the lounge to find all three of her men sitting at a circle table with Emilia, apparently playing poker.

“Haru, if you are a terrible liar, why did you agree to play?” Emilia chuckled, though it sounded forced, curling her arms around the pile of chips in the center of the table and pulling them towards her.

“I didn’t,” Haru said, his entire body rigid and his voice strained, “I was minding my own business when I was dragged in.” He shot a glare towards Amar, who just laughed.

“We needed a fourth player! And stop complaining, it won’t hurt you to spend time with other people for once. We wouldn’t want another person in the palace thinking you are a spoiled snob who thinks he is too good to grace the lesser mortals with his presence.”

“Is that what people think of me?” Haru asked, shifting nervously.

“No, of course not!” Emilia chimed in. “I think you are lovely, Lord Kamiya.”

Amar snorted. “She’s just being polite because she wants you to like her. You can’t take the word of a newcomer too seriously. Ask anyone not of noble birth living in this palace about our lordling here, and you will not receive a glowing report.”

“Would you shut up, Amar?” Vanir snapped. “You are making our guest uncomfortable.”

Emilia did indeed look like she was deeply regretting being there. Alexandra had no idea why Amar was acting this way, but she was going to spare Haru and Emilia any more discomfort.

“What’s going on here?” she cut in.

“Hello Your Majesty!” Emilia jumped to her feet. She flashed Alexandra a look that clearly said help me, glancing meaningfully in Haru’s direction. “Vanir and I were having dinner when Amar challenged us to a game of poker. I hope that is alright?”

“Of course,” Alexandra said. Haru, I hate to tear you away, but I had been hoping to see the progress you were making on your design for the library?”

Haru got to his feet, relief on his face, and immediately went to her side.

“Of course. I don’t mind at all.”

Amar snorted, but they ignored him as the pair walked off. As soon as they were safely in Haru’s chambers, Haru leaned against a chair, sagging.

“Are you okay?” Alexandra asked, rubbing his back.

“Yea,” Haru gripped the chair tightly.

“What’s going on, why was Amar talking to you like that?”

“I don’t know,” Haru said, sounding defeated, “he has been a lot to handle lately. Cruel like he was when we all first arrived, and I have no idea what I did to invite it.” Alexandra pulled him towards the bed then forced him to sit down. Haru held her waist and guided her between his legs, wrapping his arms around her torso and cuddling against her with a sigh. “It feels like he wants me to be someone I’m not, and when I didn't change, he decided
