Chapter 10

Mystery Girl

Edwin

“You’re back early?” Lucius questioned the moment I flew through his office door.

“Who is Brunilda Stone!?” I demanded.

During my run back to the fortress, I had concluded Brunilda Stone was the reason I was outcast from my own home. There is always a reason for a child to be tossed aside by his/her parents. It wasn’t that I was unloved; it was more along the lines of there is something about me she was keeping secret.

“Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time,” Lucius chuckled.

He seemed utterly unphased by the fact I was standing in his office, soaked in sweat. I had been fighting a shift since I left my home, and I had no idea how much longer I would be able to keep it at bay.

“Who is she?” I demanded again, this time a little more boldly then I would have liked.

Lucius looked at me with a puzzled expression and shrugged.

“Sit down, Edwin; I think it is time we have a little chat.” Lucius motioned to the chair across the desk.

I allowed myself to fall into the chair with a grateful sigh. Running was not always my favorite past time, but I was decent when it came to keeping up with the others.

“Why do I have a feeling I’m not going to like this,” I grumbled as I placed my head in my hands.

“I promise not to beat around the bush; I will get right to the point.” Lucius crossed his hands over one another.

I leaned forward, anxious to hear what he had to say.

“Brunilda Stone is your great grandmother,” Lucius said with a polite grin.

“That’s impossible,” I interjected with a slight laugh.

“Why is it you kids believe there have never been interspecies relationships?” Lucius threw his hands in the air. “Why exactly do you think I chose you?”

“You said it was because I have heart,” I replied as cleverly as I could.

“I also told you magic could be taught.” He pointed out with a wink.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying you are going to do this kingdom some good. You have your grandmother’s gene; I could see it the moment you walked through the door. Do you really think your brother or father could control a shift? Do you think it odd that even while you are a meat-eating dog on the inside, you choose not to be persuaded by the richness of the blood? Damn it, I chose you, Edwin, because you have a big part to play in an upcoming battle.” Lucius let out a manic laugh.

“I don’t think I follow.”

Lucius gave me a toothy grin and tapped his fingers several times on the wooden desk. I could see the excitement behind his eyes. He was enjoying the fact a secret had been revealed. Something so perplexing as the name of my great grandmother gave him such joy.

“You will learn so much more, the longer you are here. There are things in the books, things which will show you just how magical you really are.
