The thug didn’t know what the woman did to his boys.

She put her hand right through Snakes and –

His brain rebelled at the memory.

He recalled hiding behind the couch in the motel lobby until she and her friend went inside. He also recalled hoping and praying that the woman would not look for him and finish what she started.

He walked out onto the street, looking both ways.

He was safe as long as he didn’t see that woman.

“Naughty, naughty.”

From behind.

He swung around.

A young boy stood right in front of him.

“Where’d you come from?” he said.

The boy grinned and the gangster’s bowels turned to putty. The boy pointed down to the ground.

“I saw what that bitch did to your friends,” the boy said. “Pretty cool. I saw you run and hide.” The boy shook his head. “Not cool.”

The gangster had no reply. There was something wrong with that woman, but there was something worse with this kid.

“Scram, punk,” the gangster said.

“Scram? You do realize this isn’t the Thirties anymore, right?”

“What are you talking about?”

“You’re not in the Thirties anymore. Hell, you ain’t alive anymore either.”

The gangster took a step back. Memories he never thought he had began to unfurl in his head. Him running with his gang. Him making love to his wife. His mistresses. Laughing. Dying.

“What?” he stammered.

The boy’s smile widened and threatened to engulf the entire block.

“What year is this?” the gangster asked. He looked down the street, at the modern storefronts and cars lining the road.

The boy told him.

“Bullshit. Bullshit. I told you to scram.”

The boy smirked. “I’ve gotta get moving.” He stepped toward the gangster.

The gangster edged backward and tripped. He fell on his ass, but he was careful to keep the boy in front of him. His mind reeled such that he didn’t hear the kid speak.

“I’ve gotta get moving. Build momentum.” The kid’s eyes shone yellow. “I’ve got people inside me and people still yet to see.”

The gangster didn’t move, but he did briefly whimper as the Yellow Kid rolled over him and carried him along on a hellride for the ages.
