Mattie

The limo waiting outside my apartment is still not something I’m used to. I’ve ridden in them several times when going to events with Zeke or Lila, but they still make me uncomfortable. I’ve never been one for flaunting money, and this says I have money more than almost anything else. At least to me.

Evan is waiting outside on his phone. He pauses when he sees me and smiles, murmuring his goodbyes to whoever he’s talking to.

“Miss Durrand, you look especially beautiful tonight.”

I smile slightly and allow him to open the door for me. I’m careful of the very expensive evening gown he bought me. It’s all black lace and sparkly. I glamoured my feet so it looks like I’m wearing strappy heels when in fact I have on serviceable black flats. I’m using the same face as before, only my hair is pinned up in a fancy braid Lila taught me. I actually look like I grew up with money and class instead of foster care.

“You look rather dashing yourself, Mr. Pierce.”

Evan is going as himself, as he got the invite. If the same guard is on duty, he won’t recognize Evan, but he might me. So, I need to be careful of that.

The door is going to be the obstacle.

“Are you ready for tonight?” Evan pours himself a glass of champaign, and I decline one. Drinking is not on my list of pastimes.

I eyeball his drink. “Are you?”

He laughs and waves away my concern. “This is nothing. I hold my liquor well.”

“I guess we’ll see about that, but Evan, only one glass or I’m going home. I need you sharp, not in an alcohol induced daze.”

He dumps the drink in the bin. “If you don’t want me to drink, then I won’t.”

“Thank you.”

“So, do you have a plan or are we going to wing it?”

“I just need to see the jewels and the area they are kept after hours. It’ll be a piece of cake after that.”

“How?”

It’s my turn to smile mischievously. I can walk between planes to go from one place to another. I just need to see it. The cameras will never see me enter or exit.

Getting through the wards while mingling with the elite is going to be the real challenge. If I don’t disable the fire wards properly, people will get hurt or potentially even killed. I’m not all that concerned about them, but it will make getting to see past the door more difficult.

“You know I never reveal trade secrets, Evan.”

“Which frustrates me to no end with you.” He gives me a sour expression, and I laugh.

It doesn’t take long to reach the museum, and then it’s game time. Gone is the laughter, and in its place is an aloof expression that almost all rich people I know wear, including my grandparents. Zeke had the same expression when I first met him, but the longer he’s spent with me and the rest of my family, it’s slowly leached out of him. At least when he’s around us.
