CHAPTER TEN

“VIOLET’S MONEY is yours, free and clear. No strings attached,” Dylan Garrett assured her.

“And if something happens to me?” Jillian said into the phone, the image of that missing rung on the ladder in her head.

“Something?” Garrett repeated. “Like what?”

“What happens to Violet’s legacy at my death?”

He probably thinks I’m some kind of nut, Jillian thought, almost wishing she hadn’t called to ask Dylan her question.

Other than this possibility, however, she hadn’t been able to come up with any reason someone might want to harm her. Actually, this seemed less far-fetched than someone holding a ten-year-old grudge against her father and trying to take it out on her. At least it had until she had put the idea into words.

“The same thing that will happen to the rest of your assets. Whoever is named in your will as your heir will inherit it.” Garrett’s tone was quizzical, as if he couldn’t figure out what had prompted her to ask something that must seem obvious to him.

Whoever is named in your will as your heir…

Which was Drew, of course. He had been since she’d first made a will several years ago. And he certainly wasn’t trying to do her in to inherit her sudden wealth.

“Is something wrong, Jillian?” Dylan asked, that note of puzzlement still in his voice.

“No,” she said quickly.

She’d made a big enough fool of herself for one day. Even given the rapport they’d established the day Dylan had told her about Violet’s role in his own life, she couldn’t see the point of unburdening herself to him about what was going on here.

“I guess I just wanted to clarify the situation,” she said.

“Well, the bottom line is that the money is yours—and then your heirs—to do with as you wish,” Dylan said, sounding slightly relieved at her disclaimer.

The knock on her back door came at the same time Garrett said the last word of that sentence. Jillian tried to move toward the window, but the spiral cord on the old-fashioned phone wouldn’t let her get near enough to see out it.

“That’s good,” she said. “Sorry to have bothered you.”

“No bother. Call me at any time if I can be of help. Any friend of Violet’s and all that,” he said, a gentle amusement replacing the disquietude she had heard before.

The knock sounded again, but they were so near the end of the conversation that she didn’t see any need to tell Dylan there was someone at her door. It would only sound as if she were making an excuse to hang up.

“Thanks again for the information,” she said, trying to hurry the conversation to a natural end. “And be warned—I may take you up on the offer someday.”

“Anytime. I’ll look forward to hearing from you.”

“Thanks, Dylan.”

She put the receiver back on the cradle and hurried over to the door. Her hand hesitated before it closed over the knob.

“Who is it?”

The inquiry was fairly pointless since she hadn’t locked the door when she’d come inside with Jake this morning.
