CHAPTER TEN

The carriage ride home allowed Julia the time to reflect on the last few hours she’d spent in Kat’s company. Most of the time she had been naked, peaking many times over. A loud giggle burst from her lips as she thought how Kat’s tongue had felt in her neither regions. She squirmed as those wonderful memories caused her to dampen in between her legs and her nipples to throb.

Caution was key regarding the change in her relationship with Kat. They both had so much to lose if anyone found out what they did together. They would have to be careful in public. But she didn’t feel any misgivings like she first had on her drive to see Kat. Now after revealing their pasts, the guilt she carried had disappeared, all because of her lover’s understanding and acceptance.

Lover? Dare she use the word to describe what Kat meant to her? She never had a lover before, even Maria. It had been a mistake, a moment of madness on both their parts. But what she shared with Kat today was real and more consuming than she could have ever imagined. There was no guilt with Kat, unlike with Maria, but then again, she had been married at the time. Now she was a free woman, independent and of her own mind.

She liked the idea of not having to answer anyone.

The carriage came to a halt. She grabbed the borrowed dress swaddled in a muslin sheath and climbed out. She walked up the front steps to the house, ready to take a hot bath and then a nap before supper.

The butler, Emil, met her inside. She handed him her cloak and bonnet.

“Emil, have one of the maids set up a bath in my bedroom,” she bid and moved toward the stairs.

“Mrs. Whitney, you have a guest in the drawing room. Mr. Reiner has been here for over an hour.” Emil motioned to the room.

She glanced at the half-open door to the drawing room but stopped from moving in that direction. She heard shuffling within, and then the door swung open. Isaiah appeared, all smiles and his eyes flashing with cheer.

“I thought I heard your voice.” He went to her side and carried her hand to his mouth to kiss. “I’ve been waiting to see you. Where have you been, and why do you have a ball gown?”

She jerked her hand away. “I had lunch with the Countess Guetall. She lent me one of her gowns for her holiday party.”

His brow knitted as he studied her bounty. “But you and the countess have different tastes in fashion, and this gown.” He poked a slip of fabric escaping the confines of the wrap. “It isn’t the right color for your complexion. It would be better to dye one of your gowns or wear the buttercup gown I find so fetching on you.”

“It’s best if I wear something else,” she snapped, her crankiness seeping through.

His face fell. “I apologize if I’m too opinionated. I thought, as your friend, you would want my guidance.
