Figure 8.4 Development of a National Urban Transportation Network.23
The development of such national transportation networks are subject to a range of political forces and geographic barriers, but the structure of these networks nonetheless tends to evolve through a set of common stages illustrated in Figure 8.4. Initially, isolated port cities form along national coastlines or other borders, but are not connected to one another or to other cities via transportation routes. As the nationâs population expands outward from the border and frontier towns are settled, these isolated port cities become important both as key sources of supplies and as places for settlers to sell their crops and other products. Thus, feeder routes are established between port cities and the interior cities they serve, allowing people and goods to flow more efficiently. Further growth of these cities and their economies encourages additional communication and trade, not only between a port city and nearby interior cities, but also between major ports or between new but rapidly growing interior cities. This leads to the formation of connecting routes that, rather than simply allowing people and goods to be fed in and out of the nation, allow movement across regions. In the final stage, certain routes are expanded because they connect pairs of cities with larger volumes of traffic. At each of these stages, a similar process is responsible for the formation of new linkages in the networks: a need for interaction between two cities spurs the creation of a route between them, which in turn stimulates their growth, and ultimately leads to the need for still more interaction with other cities and the creation of still more and higher capacity routes.25
