Now that the rope was freed, the barrel shot upward. The Rag-O-Roc, still perched on the edge, tried to shake itself loose. Emma held tight to its arm as they rocketed higher. Hang on, she told herself. Hang on one second moreâ¦.
Bones splintered, clattering down the shaft. The elevator jolted to a halt. Emma gasped, still clinging to one skeleton arm. Slowly she got to her feet, her heart hammering, her shoulder throbbing. She had done it! She had beaten two Rag-O-Rocs!
Emma tossed the arm over the side of the barrel and looked down to see it fall. What she actually saw was the third beast soaring up after her.
The elevator could go no higher. It had dumped her onto what appeared to be a maintenance deck above the stage. She heaved herself out of the barrel and stumbled all the way to the edge of the deck. The end of the line.
Below her she saw the stage, swimming in and out of focus. Beyond that was the greenish blur of the water far, far below. Her breathing grew shallow. Dizziness threatened to toss her over the side.
She slipped to her knees. If she fell now, sheâd do the Rag-O-Rocâs work for it.
The thing had almost made it up to her level. Emma blinked, trying to think clearly, and her gaze focused on the thick metal cables that had been strung from the edge of this deck to the awning over the stage. Red paper lanterns swung from them.
The Rag-O-Roc swooped up, level with the deck. It hovered, its skull face turning from side to side. It had to know she was trapped, but it also seemed aware of what had happened to the last two Rag-O-Rocs that had tried to capture Emma.
The creature drifted closer. It would be in striking distance in a few seconds. It would grab her and carry her back over the sea, back to the Shadow Conjurer. And what could Emma do about it?
Only one thing. And it was ten times scarier than the approaching monster.
The Rag-O-Roc released a shrill cry. Emma let out her breath in one quick puff and swiveled to swing her legs out over the edge of the deck.
She grabbed with both hands at the nearest metal cable. It had more give than she anticipated. Her weight lurched forward and she slid off the ledge. She dropped with a scream, hanging on for dear life.
Emma swung her legs up and hooked them around the cable, bobbing sixty feet over the stage. She slid, stopping at the first lantern. She would have to release her legs to get around it. No way. Not happening!
There was a chittering noise above her. Craning her neck back, she got an upside-down view of the Rag-O-Rocâs head peering over the edge of the deck. What was it waiting for? It could easily swoop down and grab her.
But she wasnât going to make its job easy.
Holding her breath, she released her legs and shimmied past the first lantern.
