Visual design issues can lead you far astray in making your equivalency decision. You may be attracted to something that looks like what you want in the visual sense, but it may not do what you want in the functionality sense. Functionality is where costs balloon.

Another mistake people make is in thinking that they must use a vendor that has worked in their industry before to get the comparison. In a small minority of cases this is a good strategy—if, for example, your industry requires certain functionality that is quite specific. However, I have found that many people only think their industry is special, with specific needs that can only be addressed by someone who understands their niche. This often turns out to be an exaggerated sense of uniqueness. It is much better to think in terms of similarity of functionality than to go searching for “the company that does websites for law firms.”
