Anacharsis the Scythian [Saqlābī] attended a gathering of sages. He got involved in a discussion, and one of those present said to him: ‘Keep your mouth shut, Scythian.’ Whereupon he replied: ‘My shame is my origin. Your shame is you yourself [Diog. Laert., I, 104].

He saw that a man was worried, and said to him: ‘Stop musing, for it causes waste of time.’36

Agis was asked why there were evil people. He answered: ‘In order that men might be distracted from thinking about their own wickedness by what they tell of them.’

They asked ʾyrwthyqs [Hierotheus ?] what the pleasure of the soul was. He answered: ‘The contemplation of the bliss of eternal life, which provides a feeling of security for souls and rest for hearts, as well as the realization of the true nature of the supernatural through thoughts in the breast and the vision of the innermost mysteries through reflection.’

Someone asked Zosimus [?] to lend him money. He refused, and when somebody blamed him for this and said that that man had shamed him, he replied: ‘He did no more than make my face red once. Had I lent him the money, he would have made my face pale many times.’ [Cf. no. 33.]
