Thanks for the check and your letter. The cash came at the perfect time. I'll use some of it to get down to Miami where one of my wrestling buddies has a family condo. A group of us are leaving Moolah, a really horrible person, and starting our own group. Lots to do between now and when we leave. Wish me luck! I'll call you when we get settled.
Love you tons, Pippi
There was so much I didn't say. I couldn't mention that Moolah was a pimp and a thief or that she had a network of spies delivering information to her.
On the way home, I stopped at a grocery to restock my larder. I bought cans of garbanzos to make my favorite curry. I also stocked up on crackers, peanut butter, and sardines, foods that wouldn't go bad if we hit the road sooner rather than later.
I took the dirt road to the back entrance. Right before I disappeared behind a tree, I snuck a glance at the main entrance on Moolah Drive. Sure enough, a red truck idled outside the gate, cigarette smoke curling from the driver's window. I wanted him gone. Moolah couldn't find out about the article I'd written.
After stowing the food, I walked the long way around the lake to the training ring so the stalker couldn't see me. Giselle and Brandy were standing in front of the building, waiting for me. I walked straight in. Loitering outside would make me a target, given that the training ring stood 50 yards from the gate where the idiot idled.
Linda sat in a lawn chair near the ring, which put her at eye level with Darlene. They were deep in a whispered conference. Linda's frown lines gouged deeper than usual and Darlene seemed agitated.
When I walked by, Darlene whispered, "Kayfabe," code for "shut up, there's a mark around." I guess they considered me a clueless rube. They resumed whispering after I passed. It was obvious that they didn't want me to overhear their conversation.
I slid onto the apron and into the ring. I started hitting the ropes. I ran across and threw myself into the ropes, sprang off, and ran across to the other side and hit them again. I knew I'd have striped bruises tomorrow but I kept running back and forth, over and over. I ran the crisscross patterns, all the while wondering about Linda and Darlene's secret.
Chapter 32
20 Moves of Doom
I had swabbed the ring and brought Linda coffee for two weeks, the price for missing a practice to cover the Klan rally. My obligation was fulfilled, but I kept bringing Linda coffee to keep her sweet.
Wednesday morning, I tapped on her door and handed her the java. She passed me the empty cup from the previous day. I was turning away when she told me to wait. She went back inside and returned with a piece of notebook paper.
"These are the moves you'll be doing in your first match," she croaked. "Memorize them. You'll run through them with Moolah and me tonight.
