JACK FROST WHALING ON MY NOSE

Elliott

The greatest thing happened late Sunday night: Darcy and I studied together.

True, we were naked, and I had her feet in my lap as she read the last few articles for her media class that she’d pulled up on her phone.

Drained by her supple mouth and her blissful skin and by the way she called my name when she came, I wasn’t fidgety at all. I didn’t need to bend coat hangers with pliers, as long as I had her feet to massage. I made it through two critical essays on German Restoration dramas without significant distraction.

And when we turned out the light and she settled next to me on my pillow, soft and warm and apparently as content to be there as I was to have her there, I slept deeply and restfully.

And kissed her in the morning, moments before my phone alarm went off.

And made love to her in my chilly bathroom, under the tepid warmth of the shower.

And combed her hair before the fire until it was dry.

And walked with her through the snow to the cafeteria, where we both ate as if we’d never seen food before, laughing at the depths of our appetites.

We parted when it was time for me to head to my exam. She wanted to change her clothes and let her roommate know she hadn’t been abducted. She promised to meet me at the student union before lunch.

I walked into my Creative Dramatics final as relaxed and coordinated as I’d ever been. My monologue made my class applaud, and the teacher shook my hand. The written portion had a peculiar focus on the German dramas of the restoration period. I should have bought a lottery ticket. Surely, the gods were smiling on me that day.

Until I made it to the student union.

Liz, Aimee, and Jeff were at the coffee station. Liz was explaining what Jeff had misunderstood on his technical lighting exam, and Aimee was pointing out that he didn’t want to do tech anyway. She greeted me with relief.

“Tell Jeff he’s not going to flunk,” she said.

“He’s totally going to flunk.” Liz was ruthless. Jeff moaned.

I clapped him on the back. “Lambikins,” I told him, “you’re a few days shy of redefining brilliance for Morris Hallowell. After that, your grade point average is going to be as uninteresting as what age you learned to pee-pee in the potty, okay?”

Jeff brightened visibly. “That’s true!” He was back. He slapped a companion hand to mine on my shoulder. “My brother! We’re going to be brilliant, aren’t we?”

I could do no wrong. “Fucking geniuses. Redefining American theater.”

“We’ll leave them on the floor, their hands numb from the applause!”

“You two are nuts,” Aimee said, but she and Liz were grinning.

“You!” I heard Rafi behind me. “I want to do the talk with you!”

I turned to greet him. Jeff muttered something to me—some warning—but I didn’t need any caution.

“Rafi! Have you come to play a round of ‘Yes, And’? You’re getting much better at it, you know.
