- TWENTY-FOUR -

HE’D LOST EMBER. SIERRA. JIA and Rachel. He’d failed to stop Damian and keep the Old Ones from coming back. The world was doomed.

And now he found out that through all of his failures, he’d never even had his father back.

The man he thought was his dad turned out to be fake, a faerie changeling.

His father hadn’t woken up in the medical bay. Hadn’t had long talks with him on the drive home from the Oppenheimer School. Didn’t joke with him over pizza at his aunt’s house. Didn’t hug him good night.

Didn’t try to take him away from everything when Fort had told him all the secrets he’d been hiding.

None of it had been real. He didn’t even have his father.

And that meant he had nothing. Not anymore.

Almost from a distance, he saw himself slam the green faerie’s shoulders down against the marble floor of the castle, screaming something in a rage. But the loss was just too much to even comprehend, and he couldn’t do anything but watch as he attacked the faerie with all of his strength.

“What did you do with my father?” he heard himself scream.

The green boy winced. “Oh, no, not at all. I’ve always been a faerie. The queen turned me into your father so that I could report back on what human magic users were up to because—GAH!”

Fort pulled his fist back after punching the faerie in the stomach as the rage took over, any distance between it and his mind now completely gone as he embraced it. “You’ve been lying to me this whole time!” he growled. “I never had my father back! Where is he? Tell me, now!”

The boy shimmered and disappeared right out from under him, dropping Fort to the floor, only to reappear at his side, standing now and holding his stomach. “Really, son, we should talk about this,” the boy said, sounding like he was in pain. “I have all your father’s memories and feelings, so I really do see you as my son, just as much as he would. The queen forbade me from interfering in the battle against Damian, but I couldn’t stand by and let you be hu—”

With a roar of anger, Fort launched himself at the faerie, knocking them both back to the floor, but again, the faerie used his glamour to escape. “Okay, young man, this is enough!” the faerie said when he reappeared a moment later, giving Fort a stern look. “I’ve been lenient on you so far, because I know how shocking this must
