The Super-Duper-Secret Project

Get that thing out of my soup!” Bess yelled. She jumped up from her seat. Her chair fell backward with a loud thump.

“What is it, Bess? What’s in your soup?” Nancy cried.

Bess pointed to her soup. “Th-th-that,” she said in a shaky voice.

Nancy leaned over and peered into Bess’s bowl. She saw shrimp, and scallops, and vegetables and …

… a slimy brown worm!

Sammy started giggling. Nancy glanced at him and then at Vincent. Vincent was staring at his plate. He was trying to hide a smile.

“What is going on? What is wrong with my soup?” Mrs. Cheng said in alarm.

Nancy looked down at her own soup. There was a worm in it, too.

She picked up a wooden chopstick and dipped it into her soup. She draped the worm over it.

“Oh, gross!” George exclaimed.

Nancy peered closely at the worm. “It’s fake,” she announced. She peered at George’s and Mari’s bowls. There were fake worms in them, too.

Sammy giggled even harder. Vincent started laughing, too.

That explains why Vincent was so nice to us a few minutes ago, Nancy thought. He wanted me, Bess, George, and Mari to sit in the seats with the wormy soup bowls.

“You guys did this, didn’t you?” Nancy said to Vincent and Sammy.

Mr. Li put down his spoon. “Apologize to our guests,” he said to his sons in a stern voice. “Immediately! Or no hongbao for you.”

“Hongbao?” Nancy whispered to Mari. “What’s that?”

“Red envelopes with good luck money,” Mari whispered back. “The grown-ups give hongbao to the children on New Year’s Eve.”
