Chapter 84 THE CHARIOT OF FIRE

II KINGS 2

We must leave the kings of Israel and of Judah for a while. The time has come for us to say good-bye to the great prophet Elijah.

Elijah lived in evil days. In his lifetime King Ahab had been on the throne of Israel, and after him his wicked son Ahaziah. Still more wicked than either was the idolatrous Queen Jezebel. Ahab and Jezebel had turned the hearts of the people of Israel away, so that the Lord was forgotten except by a faithful few.

It had been Elijah's mission to tell these idolatrous kings that God would surely judge their sin. He always came to announce some dire punishment for their wickedness. Instead of changing their ways, and listening to the warnings from God, the kings tried over and over to kill Elijah. Only God's tender care had saved his life.

At last Elijah's work was done. God was going to take him to heaven. Elijah and Elisha were living at Gilgal when the word of the Lord came to tell Elijah to depart. "You stay here," the old prophet said to Elisha, "for the Lord has sent me to Bethel."

But Elisha could not bear to part from Elijah. "As the Lord lives," he said, "I will not leave you."

Together they went to Bethel, where there was a school of the prophets. The prophets came out to meet Elisha, asking, "Do you know that God is going to take your master away today?" Elisha answered, "Yes, I know it. Hold your peace."

Again Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho." But Elisha answered, as before, "As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you." At Jericho there was another school of the prophets. These prophets, too, came to Elisha and asked him, "Do you know that God is going to take away your master today?" And Elisha answered, "Yes, I know it. Hold your peace."

Elijah said to Elisha, "You had better stay here. The Lord has sent me to the Jordan." But Elisha said again, "As surely as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you."

The prophets from Jericho knew something wonderful was going to happen. They went up to a high place, where they could watch.

When Elijah and Elisha came to

the Jordan River, Elijah took his coat and wrapped it together. He struck the waters with it, and the waters were, divided, so that Elijah and Elisha walked through the river on dry ground.

On the other side of the Jordan Elijah said to Elisha, "Is there anything you would like to have me do for you, before I am taken away from you?" Elisha said, "I would like to ask for a double portion of your spirit." Elijah answered, "You have asked a hard thing, but if you see me when I am taken away, you shall have it."

The two men walked on together. As they were walking and talking, a most marvelous thing happened.
