Chapter Six

IT’S WHAT GOD would have wanted.

If Gracie Fforde had only known the passenger list of the small boat in question, she could have gone straight to the horse’s mouth and checked. She would have found that God most certainly didn’t want to be shot. In fact, if asked at that very moment, God would have admitted that what he really wanted was some onion rings, had been hankering after some in fact ever since waking up. It just goes to show, even deities can remain unfulfilled in this modern age.

‘Oh,’ Grace sighs, noticing the Coast Guard boat bobbing towards them. It curves around the still-flaming ruin of Shandler’s boat; dark ash cinders, holding the vague form of leaves, rising up from it like Chinese sky lanterns, breaking up on the breeze. ‘This can’t be good.’

‘Can we go faster?’ Peeper asks.

‘In this thing?’ Grace shakes her head. ‘We’d have more chance of outrunning them if we got out and walked.’

‘Maybe they just want to talk?’ God says. ‘We can’t just always assume the worst. I refuse to believe that the vast majority of my glorious human race are now a bunch of psychotic assholes.’

A sweet thought, a father resolutely proud of his noble children. It’s a shame that the coast guard choose that moment to start shooting at the boat as the gunfire does rather take the edge off his sentiment.

‘Psychotic assholes!’ God shouts falling back into the boat, causing Pam to emerge from underneath his robes where she had eventually fallen asleep. She runs towards the prow of the boat, yanking his leg after her. ‘Get down crazy baby!’ he shouts, trying to return his leg to the safe cover of the boat before someone is unkind enough to shoot it off.

But Pam is not to be calmed. The bullets continue to litter a perfectly pleasant New York morning and she wants none of it. She is, not to put too fine a point on it, livid about them.

‘Woah!’ God is dragged across the deck of the boat as Pam, with the sort of strength and energy one would really not expect from a baby, leaps across the deck, dragging him behind her as if he weighs nothing.

‘Hang on!’ Grace shouts.

‘I’d never have thought of that!’ God cries, his feet slamming into the prow of the boat as Peeper and Demi-John dash to help.

‘My toe’s coming off!’ God shouts, grabbing the string that attaches him to Pam to relieve the strain. Peeper and Demi-John grab hold too, all three of them bracing themselves against the side of the boat.

‘Come back Pam!’ he shouts. ‘You’re a terribly naughty baby.’

She doesn’t but surely, with all three of them holding on, she won’t be able to get far? She’s jumped into the water just ahead of the boat, surely it will mow her down any moment? That’s not what happens, what happens is that the Baron Fabrizzi suddenly picks up speed, dragged along by the absurd pull of the baby who is
