“So, thank you all for coming.” Lance said with a smile, glancing out at the sea of faces before him. “And spending the day with me and my beautiful wife.” He glanced at Cassandra who was nestled next to him, her warm brown skin aglow as her fuchsia lips sparkled. She didn’t usually wear her hair up, but she did today, with a few tendrils framing her face. This style drew attention to her graceful neck and sculpted cheekbones. She looked sublime, ethereal almost. But she wasn’t. A diamond choker adorned her neck – he’d bought her that for her twenty-sixth birthday – the sweetheart neckline of her elegant wedding dress showcased a cleavage that emphasised full, round breasts. This woman; that body, was supposed to belong solely to him. That, however, was not the case. How many other men had she been giving it to behind his back? Spreading her legs like a common whore. That pussy had probably seen more action than she’d had hot dinners. Lance continued the charade, holding his wife’s slim hand as he looked down at her face, which was lit up with emotion. She was none the wiser; had no idea what he was thinking, or feeling. More fool her. More fool them both. “I love you so much, baby.” He masked his grimace with a smile.

“And I love you too, baby. You have no idea how much.” Her eyes were glistening with tears. But were these tears of joy, or tears of guilt?

Lance now turned his attention to his best man. “Howard, my main man!” he greeted, with a smile that was tearing at his soul. “I always thought I could trust you with my life. Rely on you whenever I needed, or wanted anything. You’d be by my side, on my side, like a good friend should be.” He blinked, trying to still his hand as it began to shake, causing the wine in his glass to wobble precariously. “To friendship!” he raised his glass.

“Right back at ya, bro!” Howard retorted, his lips wavering as he raised his glass. “You’re my closest ally – best friends till the end.” Ironically, Lance and Howard were wearing almost identical suits: navy, with a red rose in the lapel. That, however, was where the similarities ended. Where Lance was of average height, Howard towered over him; where Lance was slim of build, Howard was evenly padded all over with muscle, and where Lance’s frail brown locks were beginning to recede, Howard had a full head of thick, luscious blond hair. He had already won on so many levels, why did he have to take his girl?

Closest ally, huh?

Lance’s face began to ache, with the effort of displaying his stretched, farcical smile. Today was supposed to be the happiest day of his life. Except it wasn’t. Nausea clutched at his stomach, he felt like he would vomit, his head spinning like a merry-go-round. He had clearly ingested too much alcohol – on an empty stomach – a big no-no.
