Chapter Seventeen
HERB BROOKS
It was February 22, 1980, a Friday night, and like many Friday nights at the time, I had a babysitting job. Before my ride arrived, we were watching the early news. They told us to look away if we didnât want to see it, but I just couldnât and had to lookâthe USA Menâs Olympic Hockey Team had won against the Soviets! The game was to be broadcast an hour or so later. The father of the children I was to babysit arrived; they were going to a party that evening to watch the game.
Being an over-excited and highly demonstrative 14-year-old, I didnât exactly have a poker face. When the father spoke of the upcoming game, I excitedly said, âI know who won!â He emphatically begged, âDonât tell me!â So I didnât say a word for at least two and a half seconds, but then I couldnât help but burst out, âWe won!â He was crestfallen but still kind.
Once we arrived at the house, he ushered his wife out the door quickly so I wouldnât ruin her evening as well. It wasnât long until the game began, and I had a big TV all to myself, or so I thought. His daughters were aged five and three. They were utterly uninterested in the game and kept begging me to change it. Of course, I refused. We had a tea party and played dollies while I watched the game. They were shocked each time I jumped up to cheer. Near the end of the game, they would cheer with me just to join in. And then we heard, âDo you believe in miracles? Yes!â It was a glorious moment.
When the parents came home, the father immediately told me, âYou didnât ruin it for me. The game was incredible. Were you able to watch it with the girls?â I nodded and he said, âGood.â It was incredible; a memory Iâll never forget. The team became family to all of us, and at the helm was Herb Brooks. We all loved Herb Brooks.
