CHAPTER TWELVE
Enter the Doom Master
Getting smashed through a magic doorway with two doom mages and a rock elf the size of a mountain really puts a dent in your scales.
We landed in a heap with me at the bottom. I couldn’t move. It felt like all of Slick City was standing on my back. I wished for the millionth time that I had stayed in bed. My head felt like a mudball on sports day. My tail ached as though someone had used it as a jump rope. But my ears were working just fine.
“This one is heavy,” said a voice above me.
“That is why we saved him for last,” another voice answered. “Hurry up. We don’t want to keep Master waiting.”
Their words came out in a low hiss, like they were talking through one of Tank’s phone contraptions. The pair of doom mages grunted, and the weight was suddenly lifted from my back. I cracked open one eye to see them helping Professor Basalt to his feet.
The boulder mage wobbled like he’d been on the wrong end of a mudball tournament too. The doom mages took him by the arms and led him through an open doorway. I stayed still long after they had vanished into the shadows beyond the room.
“You can get up now.” Another voice. This one was familiar.
“River! How did you get here?” The wood elf helped me to my feet. The room danced like a toddler on roller skates. “Wherever here is.”
River held me steady and smiled. “I hitched a ride on your tail, and then I zapped you with a camouflage spell. Your head will clear up very soon.”
“That explains why those skull-faces didn’t see me.” The walls around me slowed their dance to a shuffle. My head started to clear. “And nobody saw them when they attacked Professor Basalt.”
“I only saw them when you and Tank came charging at us,” River said. “They were using a spell to hide themselves. Agniz taught me one very similar. The shock of seeing you two snapped me out of the spell’s effects.”
“That’s just like when Tank and I saw them take those wizards,” I said. “They snatched them from a busy street and nobody except me and Tank saw anything.”
“Maybe trolls and goblins are too smart to be fooled by a hiding spell?” River said.
“I like how you think.”
“We need to warn the shadow guard.” She looked around the room and sighed. “But first we have to figure out where we are.”
Now that my vision had returned, I saw we were in a small room filled with cloaks. Along the walls stood several cloak racks, holding cloaks of many colors and sizes. The only way out was the doorway the doom mages had just gone through.
“We are either in a very large closet or the back room of a cloak shop,” I said.
“Or on top of the world,” River said.
She had pushed aside a rack and now stood in front of a small window.
