Mom and Dad packed a picnic lunch and put it in a backpack. Dad found a plastic pail and shovel in the shed attached to the back of the cabin, tying it to the bottom of the backpack. He also found a kite and when he opened it, I saw it was a dragon. I felt excited to be able to fly a kite at the beach and especially one as pretty as this, with all the colors.

Dad had fixed the hole in Mrs. MacIntyre’s fence, and she’d agreed to let us take Rufus with us to the beach while she stayed home. I figured that would keep both of them happy as long as we were there. Mrs. MacIntyre mentioned she’d start asking her son to take Rufus to the beach when he came to visit each week. She told us her son took her shopping and helped her around the cabin, then he went back home to his family and job.

While Mom and Dad finished putting everything together, I ran over to Mrs. MacIntyre’s house to get Rufus. She invited me in. I wouldn’t have gone inside, except Mom and Dad said it was okay. Mrs. MacIntyre was no longer a stranger to us.

Her cabin had the same number of rooms in the same order as ours, but she really seemed to like flowers. Her couch and two armchairs were covered in a floral print. She had plates hanging on the walls in the kitchen and they had flowers painted on them. Dried flowers in vases were on every table. Even her carpet was green like grass.

I was very careful not to touch anything, but I thought it reminded me a lot of spring, and I also thought she must be happy living here with so many pretty things. A teapot with roses sat on the counter next to a plate of cookies.

“Would you like tea?” she asked me, picking up the pot.

I shook my head. I’d never had tea before, but I didn’t think it was something a kid like me would like.

She lifted the plate of cookies and offered me one. They weren’t as good as Mom’s chocolate chip cookies, but they tasted like butter, and they were still warm. While I ate my cookie in the kitchen, Mrs. MacIntyre went to put a harness and leash on Rufus.

Since I was alone, I looked around at the decorations, and that’s when I noticed a little rectangle cut into the bottom of Mrs. MacIntyre’s back door. I went over and pushed the flap that covered it. I could see down the back steps and into the yard.

Mrs. MacIntyre came in with Rufus at that same moment. “That’s how he got out this morning without me. My son put it in so he could take himself out to the yard on his own, but that was before the hole in my fence happened.”

“Rufus is really smart,” I told Mrs. MacIntyre, accepting the leash from her. “Kasey doesn’t know yet when she has to go out.
