Chapter 17

THE PLOT THICKENS

Instead of heading through the kitchen toward the bathroom, I turned left down a dimly lit hallway. I could see a faint green light shining under the door. If Fernando’s description was accurate, my letters home would be in the private den.

I grasped the cold glass knob. My heart started to beat hard and fast. This was it. I could barely stand to watch detectives on TV when they might get caught, and now I was sneaking into an office. It felt strange, almost like I was watching someone else’s hand twisting and pulling the knob. I entered and quickly closed the door behind me.

Knowing I had limited time, I dove right into the papers on the desk, looking for the letters. It was easy to see because someone had left on an old-fashioned desk lamp that gave off a weird green glow. The papers were only about some boring legal stuff, something about wetland development and parking lot design. I pushed them aside and looked through several folders. Again, nothing. I stole a glance and noticed one last folder with a red tab that read PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE—DANGEROUS CAMPER. That caught my attention. Was there some dangerous person lurking around Camp Wy-Mee? It’d be a good idea to know who I should avoid.

I looked for a name, but all that I could see was Camper RR. The next page had all thebasic information, such as age, height, eye color, hair color. Other basic characteristics were listed. It could be anyone. Heck, it could be me. I read on:

Hagatha, please remember that Camper RR must be watched at all times. On the surface he appears normal enough, but don’t let that fool you. His mind is constantly working out dangerous, evil plots. Making him even more of a threat is his knack for emboldening the usually quieter children. Some thick-headed adults are also captivated by his sickening charm . . .

Who wrote this thing? Who was Camper RR? My hand bumped against the mouse and the computer screen came to life. An icon on the screen flashed: “Urgent email.” My curiosity got the better of me and I opened it. It read:

Hagatha, I’m disappointed you haven’t taken care of our little problem by now. Must I handle everything? I’ll be seeing you real soon. Love, Big Sis.

What was that about? Could it be about Camper RR? About me? And who was Mrs. Periwinkle’s big sister? I turned my attention back to the matter at hand. I had been snooping around the office for two minutes and would soon be missed. It was then that I noticed the corner of two white envelopes sticking out from under a book. My heart started to beat even faster. The envelopes looked just like the ones my mom had given me before camp so I could write home. This was it. I reached out and started to lift the book. Then I saw the phone and another idea jumped into my brain.
