AFTER SUPPER, I went to my room and had just switched on the receiver, when my phone rang.

“Hey,” Adrian said in a hushed voice. “What’s going on with Ted? He’s in a really weird mood. Mom asked him how you were doing these days, and he said you were meddling in things you ought to leave alone. And I mean he was being really crappy about it.”

I plopped down on the bed. “Oh, Adrian, it’s all a big mess. Doris has been trying to hook him up with Hope, but he got things all wrong, and now he thinks Doris is in love with him. And when I tried to talk some sense into him, he got mad and told me to butt out.”

“I always wondered if he got dropped on his head when he was a baby. I guess I can stop wondering.”

“It’s not just Ted; everybody’s acting crazy. Hope’s mad at me because she thinks I tried to hook him up with Doris.”

“Do you want me to come over early?”

“Better not come at all tonight. With my luck, Ted would show up and catch us kissing, and that’s all I need after a day like I’ve had today.”

“But I want to see you,” he whispered, and I smiled.

“Believe me; I want to see you too. After what I’ve been through today, all I want is to feel your arms around me and let you kiss all my cares away.”

“Maybe we could sneak out for a ride and park somewhere nice and private.”

“No, I need to hang around the house tonight. But I’ve got a better idea. Why don’t we make tomorrow a special date night? We can eat at Layla’s and take in a movie. Maybe find a cozy spot in the back.”

“That sounds nice… And you know,” he said slowly, “if you want, I could tell my mom I’m spending tomorrow night at Tyler’s, and you could sneak me in after the movie.”

“You mean stay the night?”

“Well, yeah. Ever since you told me about your mother giving you money for condoms, I’ve been thinking about it…and I…I want to make love with you.”

“Adrian, I don’t think that’s a good idea. I’m not sure either of us is ready for something like that yet.”

“Well,” he purred in his most seductive tone. “We could cuddle up tomorrow night and talk it over.”

“It’s too soon to even think of something like that. What say we just plan on dinner and a movie first, okay?”

“Okay,” he said in an I’m-only-playing-along voice. “Say I come over about six tomorrow night?”

“Sure, that sounds great.”

“I can hardly wait.”

“Me too.”

I hung up and sat there for a few minutes mulling things over. If I knew Adrian, he’d tell his mother he was staying at Tyler’s and show up ready to spend the night, regardless of what I said. But if he did wind up sleeping over, at least I didn’t have to worry about us doing anything serious. I’d never bought the condoms, and as long as he didn’t show up with any, things would stay G rated.
