Educational Connections

Emotions direct our every decision. The first step in managing emotions is self-awareness. Skills related to emotional intelligence can be learned. Practicing exercises to build will power increases self-regulation. Over-exercising will power or self-regulation depletes resources and back-fires. Consistent practice over the long term will increase will power and self-regulation skills.

Experiences change structure and functionality of the brain. Overly stressful environments have a negative effect on learning. Cortisol levels are elevated in anxious or stressful situation. Environments that are stressful over a long period of time will have physical implications for the brain. Consistent increased levels of cortisol will destroy neurons in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is the brain’s filing system. Eliminating unnecessary stress increases the ability to learn. Where stress is unavoidable, practicing in a similarly stressful situation, will improve performance. Angry rumination increases the likelihood of violence to the innocent. Both stress and anger deplete executive function and working memory. Positive environments have physiological implications for learning. Providing positive education experiences that connect with emotions develops emotional intelligence. Positive emotional experiences can change brain structure and functionality. Willis (2006) reported that positive working environments increased working memory, verbal fluency, episodic memory, problem solving, and creativity (p. 24).
