‘Shh!’ said Sergiana. ‘Never interrupt Sergio when he’s creating.’

‘Creating what?’

Sergiana stared at him. ‘His art, of course.’

Billy wasn’t sure about his hair being made into art, but it was too late. Suddenly, Sergio stopped clipping. He put the scissors down and surveyed his product range, intensely. He ran his fingers along the row, not actually touching any. He glanced at Sergiana.

‘Deep Fix? Wet Stink? Extreme Hard Hold? Volume Up? Pump-it Pomade? Gummy Barnet? Candle Wax?’

‘Candle Wax?’ said Sergiana.

Sergio picked the pot up. ‘Oh. This one actually is for candles.’

Sergiana came over. She held up one of the jars at the end of the row, which was brightly coloured and had a cartoon picture on it. Sergio took it from her and nodded.

‘Monkey Snot! Perfect!’

‘Um …’ said Billy, but again it was too late. With a twist of Sergio’s wrist, the jar was open, the fingers of his other hand were in, and Sergio had returned to Billy’s head, rubbing it full of Monkey Snot. Finally, Sergio swung the chair back again to face the mirror. He undid the bib with a flourish and waved it across Billy’s face to reveal, basically, a short back and sides. But spikier on top.

‘Voilà!’ said Sergio.

‘Voilà indeed!’ said Sergiana.

‘You look like you’re in a boy band, Billy,’ said his mum.

‘Yes,’ said his dad, coming in. ‘The one who’s not going to have much of a solo career.’
