HONK!!!!!!!

Startled, Carmen whipped her head around to see the headlights of a car heading directly toward the passenger side of her car. Stunned, her body steeled itself against the imminent collision. Her second hand shot up to the steering wheel and joined the other in a vice-like grip bracing for impact.

The headlights dipped, veered to her right and behind her as the driver slammed on the brakes, turning to avoid her. Carmen’s car continued through the intersection.

Able to take a breath again, Carmen could barely get out, “Oh my god!” Frantically, she checked her rear-view mirror to see if the other driver made it through the intersection unscathed as she did. Was that light red?? A look over her shoulder told her that yes, it was.

Her heart raced. Her entire body radiated with heat. She felt like she was about to start hyper-ventilating, so she quickly pulled over to the side of the road to collect herself.

Tears had streaked her face already. Her eyes were bloodshot from her reaction to what she had just seen at her mother’s house. But, when she got into her car, she essentially zoned out, overwhelmed with the flood of emotions from all that had happened in the past few days. She had intended to go to her apartment and just try to figure things out. But, nearly being blind-sided was the final straw. She reached for her cell phone and hit Vincent’s number.

The phone rang several times before the near-double ring indicated that her call was being transferred to voicemail.

“Damn it!” she said.

“Hi. This is Vincent. Leave me a message.”

“Vincent, please call me as soon as you can.” Her voice was shaky and weak. Surely, her plea would be answered soon. She tapped the “end call” on her phone’s screen and dropped the phone in her lap.

Her mind raced with all the stuff happening around her. Trying to focus on one thing was nearly impossible. ...Maybe Vincent was only a little busy and he was just screening me for the moment. So, she grabbed the cell phone again and tapped Vincent’s number.

Once more, she heard the quick, double-ring. “Damn it!!” She slapped the steering wheel in frustration.

Running her hand through her hair, she relaxed back against her seat. She let out a long, slow exhale. With her eyes staring blankly into the roof of her car, she simply couldn’t focus on any one thought in her head. Unable to come up with any other solution, she hit Vincent’s number on her phone once more.

Ring... Ring... Ring-Ring. At the sound of the double ring, she threw the phone down on the passenger seat. “AAAaaaaahhhhhh!” she grunted in anger. The phone bounced off the seat and onto the floor. Unable to reach for it, Carmen just threw her hands up on the steering wheel and dropped her head over them.

It was a few moments before she was able to gather herself enough to drive the car again. She took a few deep breaths and resolved to make it to her apartment building.
