CHAPTER 18

Tye’s sight wobbled as he looked into the polished metal, the reflection staring back not much like what it should have been.

“Don’t be too shocked,” Chrome said, resting against tent fabric, looking as if he was enjoying the wind being gone.

Tye agreed with the look, truth be told. His face itched to high heavens from the wind, after having walked what felt like forever without proper Booms clothes. It had been pleasant to walk up to the little tent village and immediately find an empty tent. He didn’t think much of luck, but it felt awfully like that.

“Not sure you’ll be able to go back to normal,” Chrome teased.

Tye considered himself in the metal again. Even though everything was spinning— the dust did that pretty good— Tye knew what he was supposed to look like. He knew he was balding, hair ringing around, leaving a big patch of nothing at the top. Honestly, that feeling of the sun on his noggin was an everyday thing, except when blocked by a hood. But now he thought on it; that feeling hadn’t been there since they teleported. Now he looked, it could pretty well be seen why.

His hair had grown back, even though it made no sense.

And that wasn’t the only weird thing, either. He was colorful. That was the best way to put it. His hair, for sure. Although he hadn’t put much into thinking on it, he had expected his hair to be different. Shift was a weird-looking fellow for many reasons, but his crazy hair was definitely one of them. Chrome too, now. Although it was still mostly black, he got colors too. Tye’s was damn colorful, though, with all the colors he knew plus more. Pretty as a sunset, shades kinda random, but bright like looking at a light, almost glowing.

But what he hadn’t been expecting was the skin on his face to be like that too. Well, not as bright. It still looked like skin, he figured, but bruised in splotches, like a bunch of birthmarks.

“What do you think?” Chrome asked, his smirk just as shaky as everything else.

Tye laid back down on a small pile of sheets, closing his eyes. “L-looks—looks pretty cool hon—honest. Different—different b-but cool.”

“Yeah, I don’t mind either, besides the eye…” Chrome shifted uncomfortably. “Can’t have everything I suppose. And the others will think we are mods now. It would have been more useful in the city than out here. May just have to say we dyed our hair, I suppose. It’s believable enough. Imagine if we tell the truth…” he chuckled. “They’d laugh in our face.”

“Y-yeah…”

“You need another flower? Or do you think you’ve snuffed enough to have a vision?”

“Oh…” Tye tried thinking, but it wasn’t all that easy. That was a pretty good sign he was good and snuffled. “N-nah… should—should be real—real s-soon, yep.”

At that moment, the tent's flap zippered open. Tye squinted his eyes just enough to see Shift slip inside, then turn and zip it back up. He closed his eyes again.
