CHAPTER THREE

THE PILLAR IN THE

MOUNTAINS

THE PUPIL, whose home was in the western world, far from the towering mountain range upon whose slopes the master lived, had just been asking about the venerable teacher of Nazareth and sought the master’s guidance.

“In my native land,” the pupil explained, “there are many famous scholars who do not think this teacher ever truly lived on earth and they believe his features had been formed by legends; some, indeed, are of the view that the reports about his life are nothing more than veiled accounts of astral myths, supposedly held sacred by cults in ancient times.

“But you, a source of purest light, have many times said words to me which, I believe, you drew on purpose from the narratives that tell about the life and teachings of this Jewish master.

“You spoke with reverence when you mentioned his name and, if I understood your words correctly, you rank him higher than all others that ever scaled the path to all-embracing oneness.

“Why, I wonder, do I not find you as well among the faithful who profess themselves believers of that Jewish master, whom even you hold in such high esteem?”

The pupil sought an answer to that question because he still was unaware of Him who ultimately is the “Master” in every master born within the Spirit.

YET THE GUIDE to whom these words had been addressed merely listened with an understanding smile, but did not break his silence.

And so the pupil, having doubts about his question, feared it might have been improper and, not quite knowing what to say, continued,

“Doubtless, you are right to find my question foolish, given that you master spiritual forces of whose reality my teachers in the West knew nothing.

“Surely you must look with pity on us people in the West!

“Yet even so, I ask you to regard at least this single question worthy of your answer,

“Would it not be better for us people in the West to leave that Jewish master’s teachings be and rather treat them like an ancient myth that nowadays has nothing more to tell us?

“Every age has, after all, its own approach to seeking truth, according to its needs and circumstances.”

WHILE THE PUPIL was saying these words, the master stood still.

On their walk the two had reached the height of a plateau that separated the waters of two rivers.

The place where they stood was marked by a mighty square pillar of stone, hewn from a single rock in ancient times; each side bearing a flat surface.

Deeply carved into the rock, in the country’s native script with letters of majestic size, the pillar bore the sacred syllables: OM MANI PADME HUM, signifying, “Truly, the lotus blossom bears the secret.”

And underneath those words one saw a sign directing foreign pilgrims toward their journey’s destination.

“DON’T YOU think,” the master remarked as if he, lost perhaps in his own thoughts, had failed to hear the pupil’s question, “Don’t you think it would be better that this old colossal pillar vanish from this site?

“I
