Chapter three

Return, Rage, Reprisal

ALISTAIR

"Don't do this, Sebastian."

His dog pulled and strained against his restraint as my keeper stepped forward and launched a boot into my ribs. I'd been on my hands and knees, staring straight ahead at the door to my cell. I couldn’t look to my left to the remains of those that they had fed to me. I couldn’t look behind myself and risk seeing who they had most recently placed with me to act as my sustenance.

A child. They had placed a child in the confines of a cell where they were creating a new vampire. Where they were changing me from what I was to the loathsome predator they wanted me to be.

I had held out. What I had done to the others disgusted me, made me want to end myself, but this was a child. An innocent. I'd held out for days, but I was growing weaker, both mentally and physically.

They wanted to break me. Sebastian wanted to break me. I would tear my own throat out before destroying the child.

His voice was mocking, and I could sense his glee as he stood over me. "What did I tell you? Who am I?"

I grit my teeth. "Master Sebastian, don't do this."

"You are so very special, aren't you? Some genealogy that makes you different, that makes your blood an ambrosia, the finest of nectars. I was never special, pig. I had to work and plan for everything I ever received, and you walk in here and immediately find favor with the lords. Well, you're at my feet now, and soon you'll be engaging in what you used to consider the most base and evil of carnalities.

"I'm doing you a favor, pig. You'll realize that there is no good and there is no evil. There is hunter, and there is prey, that is everything. Can you hear it? Can you hear the beating of her heart, the seductive song of the blood rushing through her veins? Can you smell the panic and fear pouring from her? You shall indulge and you shall learn that you are no better than any of the rest of us."

I began to salivate, and that almost caused me to retch. He was right. I could sense her fear and I could hear her heartbeat. Maybe I could see to my own end before succumbing, but if something happened, if she cut herself in any way, I would lose control. That was a certainty.

Once I realized that, everything else fell away. It had been weeks and each day I had been growing closer to what I had been. There was a dark amusement to be found in that now that I wanted oblivion, my times of lucidity grew longer and stronger.

The dog looked past me, and I felt spittle fly as it began growling and barking at the little girl.

My fear and desperation slowly shifted. Like an old, comfortable coat, I felt the mantle of my father's rage and indignation slowly envelop me. Madness burbled up from my depths.
