Chapter 20

Within the hour, a town car arrived to cart me home. I was still dumbstruck by Carlton’s marriage to Rebecca, a North Korean national. And the jolting prospect that Dr. K could be linked to terrorists was beginning to sink in. I knew his company was manufacturing a wound care product that some of the Six had used. Maybe W2 had been used to inflict CJD. But most puzzling of all, who would try to kill not only me but now also Carlton?

The driver swung into my driveway, and I focused on Tommy and Gabriel pacing around the yard, as if hunting for hidden treasure. I was already troubled over the car crash, but a deepened sense of uneasiness overcame me when I studied Gabriel slamming a fist into his other palm.

“Why are you guys here?” I asked calmly, aiming to hide my apprehension.

“You must’ve turned off your cell. We thought you’d be home,” Tommy said.

“What’s with the chauffeur?” Gabriel asked. “You need to keep your cell on. We have to be able to find you.”

Something was out of whack. Gabriel acted like he didn’t trust me.

“What’s going on?” I asked Tommy. “I knew Gabriel was buying a few beers, but I didn’t think you’d be pulling an all-nighter.”

“You don’t look so great yourself,” Tommy said. “What’s with the ripped skirt?”

“Was in a car accident. Someone must’ve tampered with Carlton’s brakes.”

“You were riding with Carlton?” Gabriel lost no time in doing a hurried examination of my body. “Have you been to a doctor? You need a thorough checkup. I don’t like the look of that gash on your wrist.”

“I don’t need to go to any hospital.”

Gabriel rubbed my arms like a surrogate hug. ““I’ll take care of you. Is Carlton having his car checked out? A killer targeted both of you?”

“All I know is that we had a pretty scary drive home,” I said calmly. “The sheriffs came to investigate. I left before they came to any conclusions.”

“Before you two start falling all over each other, let’s talk about another part of CJD puzzle,” Tommy said. “I just got stung by a hornet and could use some Courvoisier.”

“I don’t have any cognac.” I unlocked the side door to the garage. “There’s some Tanqueray by the bar. And orange juice in the fridge. Help yourselves while I change.”

I sponged off the cut rimming my wrist and another running diagonally the length of my left arm and slipped into a sweatshirt and jeans. Tommy and Gabriel circled around the living room in silence.

“What’s with you two?” I hurried down the staircase. “It’s like a morgue in here.”

“Phenomenal choice of words,” Gabriel said, “considering someone’s tried to kill you at least twice.”

The usually flamboyant Tommy took center stage. “I’ve discovered Judge Isley, the judge who exonerated Premier, didn’t do a very thorough job in examining the medical records. He’s part of the conspiracy.”

“We’re back to the conspiracy theory?” I asked impatiently.

“Don’t be so dismissive, Baby Cakes. I’m doing this for you and not the other way around.
