The woman who set my mother up in the first apartment became fearful of being suspected of harboring a Jew. My mother suspected that the woman who lived in the apartment may have squealed on her to other Poles since an acquaintance of the woman proceeded to blackmail my mother at her place of work. So my mother fled.

First, I was hiding out. I took off my band [armband with the Jewish star] and I went to Lonka’s friend’s house and I was hiding out there. We were paying her. She did it for money. She didn’t do it out of the goodness of her heart. That she’s gonna take me in and my parents we were paying her. After a while, she decided that she didn’t want to take a chance anymore. Now that I think about it I don’t know if she helped me or she told the Ukrainians where I am. The woman who brought me there, I just had a sneaky suspicion. I don’t know whether I’m right or wrong that she was the one that later [sent people to blackmail my mother]. They used to come where I worked, the Ukrainan boys, they used to come and they used to blackmail me. And I have a feeling it must have been from her family because they knew where I worked and she’s the only one who knew where I’m working. Because for some reason they recognized me. So, when I had a watch on my hand, I gave them the watch and got rid of them. I had a watch. I had a ring. I had a necklace. Whatever I had. I didn’t care. So I gave it to them and they left me alone for a little while.
