Chapter 16 - Jesse
Jesse drove Maya back to her apartment and then sat outside in his rental, waiting for the limo to bring Benjamin home. He wouldn’t try to speak to him, but he needed to see him again. He just needed to figure out how to go about everything without making it hard on Maya and Benjamin. He needed a plan and it had to be a good one.
There was no way Maya would go for him walking into his mother’s home and confronting her with what he knew. The old Jesse James would have already had that conversation. He’d have gone off the handle, cursed out both his mother and his father, accused his father of being a bigot and his mother of extortion. He’d have gotten Maya and Benjamin in a huge predicament, and alienated himself from everyone all over again.
The truth was, Jesse was not a billionaire. His father was. His mother was. But Jesse was just as broke as anyone else serving next to him in the military. His father was the old-fashioned kind who didn’t believe a man should get a single dime he hadn’t paid for, and Jesse didn’t want his father’s money.
The limo pulled up, and Jesse’s pulse quickened. A minute later, Benjamin exited the car, pulling his backpack up around his shoulders. He looked so handsome in his private school navy-blue uniform. He was such a handsome little guy with his warm brown skin, dark eyes, and those soft curly locks that seemed to fall into his face each time he moved his head.
Jesse placed his hand on his car door to open it just as the door to the apartment building opened.
“Hey, buddy!” Maya ran out to meet her son. “How was school?”
What was he thinking? Jesse hit the auto locks on the door. Obviously, he would not be able to control himself around Benjamin. Something needed to happen quickly. He’d lost too much time with both of them.
Jesse’s phone rang, making him just about jump out of his skin. He glanced at the screen. It was his mother. He watched Maya guide Benjamin to the door before answering. Just before they disappeared inside, Maya turned around and gave him a warning look. Jesse grinned. Maya couldn’t be mean if she tried. It was one of the things he’d loved about her. There was nothing fake about her. She wore her heart on her sleeve, and she made no pretenses about her feelings, whether good or bad.
His phone stopped ringing and before he could pick it up to call his mother back, it started ringing again. It was his mother again.
He answered, “Hey, Mom. Sorry. I was just about to call you back.”
“Where are you?” Her voice sounded tired.
“I’m on my way to the hospital now. How’s Dad doing?” Somehow, he needed to make amends with his father. Not only would it solve all of their problems, but Jesse was tired of the stress between them.
“I’m scared, Jesse. I don’t think he has much longer.
