Durbin usually leaves his office around five-thirty, so I went home around four, scooped out a chicken breast from the crock pot and flipped the device on warm for Tim when he got home. I sat on the back porch with my chicken and a glass of wine and tried to relax. There was nothing exciting about doing surveillance. Usually itâs sitting around for hours waiting for something to happen. Argus was stretched out on the floor napping. I really wanted to stay home, but duty called. I finished my dinner, put my dishes in the dishwasher, and put Argus in his crate. Tim would be home in less than an hour to rescue him.
I took the beat up Corolla and drove to Brunswick and waited for Durbin to emerge from the Bath Iron Works building where he worked. Fortunately it was one of BIWâs smaller facilities, so it was less likely that I would lose him in the quitting time traffic.
I spotted Durbinâs car as it emerged from the parking lot. I pulled out into the line of traffic a few cars behind him so as not to be spotted. I was pretty sure that he had no idea that he was being investigated. Derek and Tim were both professionals and knew how to tail a suspect. I was just hoping I wouldnât be spotted as this was my first tail!
I followed Durbinâs car to the gym. I parked in the large parking lot where I could keep watch, pulled out my M3p player and listened to a book on tape. It was better than just sitting around. After what seemed like an eternity, Durbin emerged from the gym and got in his car.
I expected he would be heading to Billyâs Sports Bar as he had on previous nights, but when he left the parking lot he turned his car in the opposite direction. Durbinâs car merged onto the interstate and headed south on interstate 295. At the Freeport exit he turned off the highway and headed into Freeport village. It was high tourist season so I was able to follow and blend in with the other traffic.
There were three cars in front of me and I was afraid that I might lose him when one of the cars decided to take a left turn and wait until the traffic was clear in both directions for three miles. I was beginning to panic when I saw Durbin pull into one of L.L. Beanâs parking lots. L.L. Bean is a world famous sporting goods and clothing store with a substantial mail order business. The store is open twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. Itâs a great place to go, no matter what the time is.
Durbin was already out of his car by the time I pulled into the parking lot. So he was going shopping? So what? Nothing illegal or immoral about shopping. I put on my glasses and a hat as a sort of disguise and followed him into the store.
