On another trip the class walked to the Monastery of San Simeon in southern Jerusalem. It took a full hour to get there, and upon their arrival the guards of the monastery, fearful of damage, were reluctant to allow them in to wander on the trails. The trip chaperones promised that the class would be careful, so the guards finally relented and let them in to see the beautiful views. These trips were a natural development of the earlier trips initiated by Landau to provide informal instruction to her pupils, a practice not adopted in other schools until many years later.
Since Jerusalem was a small city, pupils often saw their teachers outside class and related to them as people as well as teachers. Walter Reis, a handsome young teacher of mathematics, was a great favorite of many pupils, who admitted to having a crush on him. Elhanan Wachman, on the other hand, was a seasoned veteran, whose Bible classes were popular for decades. Batia Salasnik, a history teacher, was remembered fondly for not abandoning her pupils, since she returned to the Evelina School after marrying and having children. Liselotte Levy, a beloved art teacher from Italy, gave Rivka Zweigâs graduating class a painting, urging them to meet annually as Old Girls in order to circulate the painting among members of the class. Varda Heinemann, who fled Germany, was appreciated for her music classes and for riding her bicycle to school, an uncommon practice among married women at the time.
