CHAPTER FIFTEEN

* * *

Laura

“Olivia, don’t cry, please.” I pulled her to me, stopping her from throwing shirts and jeans into her bag while rivers of tears flowed down her red cheeks. “Come on, you’re breaking my heart.”

Our three weeks together ended quickly, almost too quickly. We had three midweek weddings, four weekend ones, and on top of that, a ton of editing and handcrafting photo albums.

I taught Olivia how to organize her time right, how to handle clients, how to find solutions so they’d be happy. She perfected her job as my assistant, and I had to admit, I actually enjoyed having the company while I worked, especially that of my sister.

Then Sunday night rolled around. Olivia’s return home became a real thing, and I had to fight everything in me not to agree to her pleas to stay for a few more days. I consoled her when she cried and offered my lousy version of a compromise, to accompany her on her trip home.

Besides, I promised to back her up and confront them about her career choice. Even though she’d be eighteen, it’d be nice for her to not spend the last year at home under their constant pressure.

She returned the hug, her tears soaking through my shirt. “I don’t want to go back. Why can’t I stay here and be your assistant for the rest of the summer?”

“Because…” I held her shoulders and drew back. “As much as I love having you here, you have to graduate. You have your reading materials and summer assignments and you can’t do them here.”

“That sucks.” After wiping her tears angrily, she tossed the remaining clothes in the bag and zipped it shut. “They’re going to give me shit, I just know it.”

I gave up on language-ing her, not with that gut-wrenching frown on her face. She reminded me of myself nearly a decade ago. She wasn’t exaggerating either. Mom and Dad had been quiet for the past few weeks, meaning they’d been preparing to tell her everything they thought of her decision in person.

“I won’t let them hurt you.” I took her hand in both of mine, tightening my hold. “You’re not alone, ever.”

“Thanks.” She sniffed.

Sounds of the lock being picked came from the door, followed by the doorbell ringing.

“Zach!” Olivia’s eyebrows shot up.

“Zach what?”

“Oh! Did I forget to mention Zach’s taking us?”

“No!” I gasped, finding it hard to believe she’d do this. Scratch that. I believed she could’ve done it, though I never thought she would.

“I texted him last night and he said yes.” She leaped on me, squishing me with everything she had. “Please don’t be mad. I didn’t want you to have to go the whole ride back on the bus alone.”

The bell rang the second time. I separated myself from her, unable to stay mad at my sister. Her heart was in the right place. And also, I loved that they bonded. I trusted Zach to be a decent role model for her, and she could’ve used the positive reinforcement.
