Staying Safe

Before you connect to the Internet, send or receive email or use someone else’s CD/DVD/USB memory stick you need to ensure your Windows 7 security features and other programs are set up and working.

Here is a check list to help:

1. Set up your User Accounts and passwords (Section 9).

2. Check that Windows Firewall is switched on (Section 4).

3. Select settings to enable Windows Defender to scan and remove spyware and malware. (Sections 5 and 6).

4. Install and activate an anti-virus program (Section 3).

5. Select your Security options on Internet Explorer (Section 15) and be vigilant against Phishing (Section 12).

6. Choose the level of security for Windows Live Mail (Chapter Twelve, Section 8).

7. Ensure that all the settings you choose are high enough to protect your computer, your privacy and your work.

8. Remain alert to any public announcements of new threats and follow the advice given.

9. Stay up to date.
